Online Learning Weeks 2- 3

Hello All!
I hope you are well. I am also hoping that we can connect in a video chat over the next week; either before or after Easter.
*Watch both spaces for a notice of a meet up!

Things you need to be doing:

  • Finnie Walsh: Reading goals:
    • Read up till end of Period 1 by Monday April 13.
    • Complete Period 2 by Monday April 20
    • Complete reading Period 3 by Monday April 27
    • Finish reading the book by Wednesday April 29
    • Assignment: Just one so far: Characters and Foreshadowing: you should have completed this by the end of this week.
    • more assignments to come, so keep on reading the novel!
  • Tiny Concert: Part 1 and 2:
    • Almost everyone has posted their link into the comments. Several people said they had a difficult time posting their link. (just copy and paste into comment section on classroom, if not, email me your link)
    • Part 2 is now up!  This is an assignment. There is a due date set for next week.
  • Kindness Diaries:
    • I have heard from two people who do not have Netflix and can not watch the episodes. Sorry but I have not been able to find them any where else online.
    • *I will be posting an alternative question each Friday for those who are unable to watch along. (you'll just comment on the  KD assignment in GC)
  • Travel Blogger:
    • Since this is a New Media, English 11 course it was always my intention that you guys try on the hat of a travel blogger. So in the here and now, you get that chance.
    • As a post script (P.S.) to this assignment: as some of you know it is my family's plan to travel abroad next year. Our plans have had to adjust and will adjust again as time unfolds the world situation; however, there is a very real possibility that my family and I will be visiting the exact same travel destination you will be writing about. So your research is NOT in VAIN!
  • Report cards:
    • Your term 3 report cards are coming out next week: they will be online.
    • We have had clear instructions from Mrs. Hamblett that ONLY the work done BEFORE Spring Break should contribute to the term 3 grade.  Everything we do after the Spring Break will contribute to term 4 marks.
I hope this gives you a good grasp on what we are working on and towards over the next week and following. I'll be gathering us together for a chat soon - just let me figure out the technology!

Online Learning: Week 1 in Review

Is it Friday, already?

This week in English 11 we really did not do too much.  All but one student has joined the G classroom - so we are looking fairly united!

Good job everyone! I also loved hearing from you all. =)

Your tasks this past week were:

1. Find a concert from the NPR Tiny Concert listings in You Tube. Copy and paste the link into the comments below the assignment.

   * Next: we will be using these next week for an assignment.
2. Begin reading - online - the class novel, Finnie Walsh. You should have read for at least 20 minutes. You have an assignment on the characters and foreshadowing of the novel: this should be completed for next Monday, April 6.
3. Watch Kindness Diaries # 7 Friday!
*Next: you will have a full week - until next Friday - to respond to the journal entry for that episode.  You will respond in google classroom.

Coming up:

I'll be giving you a bit more work this coming week, but you will have several days to complete the assignments.
You are going to have an assignment where you will be a TRAVEL BLOGGER!
Need to contact me?: comment in G Classroom, or send me an email: dchase@sd73.bc.ca

Stay cool...and I don't mean the snow: gasp!

Mrs Chase's Deep Thoughts...

WORKLOAD:
My approach to this online learning is that you get to feeling comfortable and know how to find the information. So far so good?
I am not assigning work everyday, but more than likely it will look like every other day.  If you miss a day of checking the sites, not to worry as you will normally have 4-5 days to complete an assignment. Whether you do it straight away or at the last moment is up to you all. So, rest and orient yourself as technology, power supply, and as state of mind allows.
I see other teachers planning meet ups with zoom and online video chats: that's so cool! I'm not going to force all of that right now.  We will get to that place slowly and gradually. Everyone is stressed enough, and I am just SO impressed with all of you and your ability to adapt to this odd time in our life.  It brings a little tear to me eye.

Once you are comfortable:

  •  start reading Finnie Walsh novel: read 10-12 pages every two days.
  • FREE easy link here: Start reading!
  • This Friday: Kindness Diary # 7 is coming up!
  • Add your link to Tiny Desk Concert on the classroom page: this IS for marks!

The class novel: Finnie Walsh

Here is a link that I have vetted. If you don't mind the advertisements interspersed throughout, you can read the novel on this site (without signing up for an account with a credit card!):

LINK: Start reading now!

This novel is divided very unusually - see if you can find that out in the table of contents.

The new plan...

Hello Everyone,
(this is cross-posted on the blog and on the google classroom spot)

I miss you!

I hope you are doing well and not driving your parents and/or your siblings too nuts. (just a little?) While we don't know how long we are going to be in this situation, I believe we should proceed as close to normal as we can. So, at this point you have two tasks to do, in order to set up online learning and teaching. Are you ready to accept this mission?

Here's your mission this week:

1. Sign into the google classroom spot: you may have already done this...but you need to add yourself to the class. Here's the class code: imgf36g
2. Go to our class blog and follow by email: whatever email you check regularly is the one you want to use. Here's the blog: mrschaseenglish11@blogspot.com
Once you are on the blog page you will see a spot on the right corner where you can enter your email address.
Next, get ready to assume the role of an English 11 student again, on Monday March 30, 2020.
Enjoy the last several days of your non-break, 2 week spring break.

High fives,

Mrs. Chase

End of Week 4!

Already we have completed four weeks into the semester!

What we have been doing:

  • We read the short story, "Fall of a City" and answered questions and vocabulary.
  • We worked on a group stereotyping discussion, based upon 8 different people.
  • We have read our third short story, "Two Fishermen" (on Friday) and questions on the story were handed out.
  • We have watched three episodes of the Kindness Diaries on Netflix and have responded to them in classroom journals.
Next week:
  • more work: discussion, documentary and a writing assignment on stereotypes.

Creative Writing & Music Video

The executives at Music Video Voltaire company have contacted you to create the next chapter to the original music composition that the band, Amber Run, created. You represent their target audience and they need your help in creating the next chapter. You will want to watch the video on YouTube to get a feel for the original story line.
